Why do Americans take so many drugs for depression?

Is an American's depression worse or different than past generations of Americans or people of other countries? Or have pharmaceutical companies fooled the medical community AND their patients? I'm amazed how many people on Answers are medicated, especially with the known side-effects of these drugs. What's going on ?
